White Linen Evening
Lyrics ©2002 Lis Harvey
She lead a decorated life
thirty years in the army, ten as a wife
known best as the widow who sat by the window
and you know the rest
When she took her own life
her hand shook so bad, she had to pull the trigger twice
ripping two holes though the white linen evening
that sing
ly-dy-dy-ooh...
Her son and his wife
they flew down from New York,
drove to Newport News
to bury the widow who sat by the window
They inherited her land
a hundred acres or more, and deed in hand,
they walked through the meadow, yellow with flowers
that she grew alone.
And the son lead his wife
up the small hill where rested still his father's life
under the deep earth that smelled like the dark summer nighttime.
though the faraway bells of the church sounded the noontime
they chimed
la-de-dy-dy-dy-ooh...
She lead a decorated life
thirty years in the army, and ten as a wife
known best as the widow who sat by the window
and you know the rest
We're all blessed with one life
and we've all got the right to do with it what we like
if just to hear something in the white linen evening
to make it sing
la-de-dy-dy-dy-ooh...
